Domestic abuser jailed after attacking woman in Gloucester

Jeremiah Joshua Smith, 40 and of no fixed address, was sentenced to five years and eight months behind bars after leaving the woman with a fractured spine during a violent attack.

The assault took place at her Gloucester home on July 31, 2025.

Smith had used a key to enter the property, where his ex-partner lived with her two children, both of whom witnessed the attack.

He pleaded guilty at Gloucester Crown Court to causing grievous bodily harm (GBH) with intent and assaulting a neighbour.

Recorder R Weekes KC deemed Smith a danger to future partners and imposed a 15-year restraining order. He has also been prohibited from entering Kingsway.

Detective Constable Philpott said: "It is clear that Smith poses a very real danger to the women who he forms a relationship with.

"Due to the amount of times he has been put before the courts due to his behaviour, he has now been given an extended licence as it is obvious that he poses a significant risk to women."

The court heard harrowing details of the assault, including how the victim had to push her children out of a downstairs window to protect them from Smith, who was armed with a knife.

He punched, threatened, and stamped on her, leaving her with a 7.5cm slash to her leg and telling her he would kill her.

While she lay injured on the floor, Smith reportedly told her to clean up her own blood.

Smith also attacked a neighbour, striking her in the head and back of the head with enough force to prevent her from getting up.

Smith has 32 previous convictions for 64 offences, many involving violence against women.

His first domestic abuse offence was recorded in 2006.

Alongside the restraining order, he was also handed an extended sentence of three years on licence.

The court heard the victim had ended the relationship just four days before the attack.
