Drunk driver jailed after killing teenager in Brockworth

Ashley Quinton, 38, was more than twice the legal alcohol limit when he collided with 18-year-old teenager Tyler Durn in Brockworth, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Quinton, from Gloucestershire, pleaded guilty to causing death by driving without due care and attention while over the legal alcohol limit and was sentenced to four years and two months in prison.

Ellie Durn, Mr Durn’s mother, told Gloucester Crown Court: "The way in which Ty was taken from us will traumatise us as a family forever."

The collision happened at 10.50pm on Ermin Street in May 2023, roughly a mile from Mr Durn’s home.

He had been returning home after visiting his daughter in Cheltenham.

Neil Treharne, prosecuting, told the court Quinton had consumed nine pints of beer before getting behind the wheel of his Vauxhall Vivaro van.

Mr Treharne said: "It's quite clear he definitely was intoxicated and not fit to drive."

The court heard that Mr Durn had been riding his Suzuki 600 motorcycle at between 66mph and 76mph in a 30mph zone.

Judge Rupert Lowe said at a previous hearing: "[Tyler] died because [Quinton] drove carelessly and when he shouldn't have been driving at all, because he was way over the limit, and that's the bottom line.

"It has been calculated that Mr Durn was himself doing more than double the speed limit, and undoubtedly that would have been a contributing factor both to the collision and to the tragic result."

Mr Durn’s mother told the court she now spends most of her time at his grave and feels like "a different mummy" to her other children.

Becca, the mother of Mr Durn’s daughter Clementine, said the child "often looks for daddy when we go past his work."

Matthew Quinn, Mr Durn’s father, described the loss as "It is utterly heartbreaking."

Addressing Quinton directly, he said: "This has not only ripped apart ours and Ellie's family, but it's also ripped apart yours, Ashley."
