The former Arsenal player Thomas Partey has been charged with five counts of rape and is due to appear in court next month.

The 32-year-old, of Hertfordshire, has also been charged with one count of sexual assault.

Two of the counts of rape relate to one woman, three counts relate to a second woman, and the one count of sexual assault relates to a third woman.

The incidents are alleged to have taken place between 2021 and 2022, Sky News reports.

Partey is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, August 5.

The midfielder joined the London side back in 2020 and spent five years at the club before leaving this summer after his contract expired.

He was said to be attracting interest from clubs including Juventus, Barcelona and Fenerbahce following his departure.

His time with Arsenal was marked by recurring injuries, but he played 35 times last season, scoring four goals.

Previously, he had played for Spanish side Atlético Madrid between 2013 and 2020, alongside loan spells at Mallorca and Almería.

He has also represented Ghana at an international level, playing for them in three Africa Cup of Nations.

He was named in the CAF Team of the Year in 2018, and won Ghana Player of the Year in 2018 and 2019.
