THE dismantling of a Sixways' stand has begun as it takes the first steps towards enhancing the ground as a multi-purpose sports location.

The dismantling of the north stand is the first step towards preparing for their planning application, which they showcased in a public forum in December.

The stand will be sold on rather than disposed of in line with sustainability targets.

Stephen Vaughan, Worcester Warriors' strategy director, said: "In line with our drive to create a truly sustainable business model, the sale and rehousing of the north stand is part of a wider effort to ensure that Sixways is able to provide adequate capacity and facilities for future spirt and entertainment events, whilst it also gives us the space to explore how we can enhance the experience of all those that visit."

The planning application is yet to be approved but Sixways remains hopeful that it will be and its proposal of a new events space can be completed.

Sixways hopes to:

  • Redevelop the north stand, increasing the stadium's capacity and implementing a new 'Watch Tower', viewing platform.
  • Create a destination for events and sport for the wider community - including Worcester's first padel centre.
  • Build a new medical and sports rehabilitation centre.
  • Build a new 130-bed hotel, equipped with an all-day restaurant and bar.
  • Create a new, multifunctional events space for corporate events, exhibitions and other occasions. There are hopes that the events space can become a national hub for esports competition.

Sixways explained the dismantling of the stand aims to take short-term steps towards improving the stadium for tenants such as Worcester City and Worcester City Women next season alongside Worcester Warriors, should they return to RFU competition.

Sixways has not yet revealed who the stand has been sold to, however, it has confirmed that it is to someone else in the rugby space.
