An ambitious challenge in the Cotswolds has been inspired by the courage and determination of a young child with a rare condition.

Rupert was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), a rare genetic condition which weakens muscles, at just eight weeks old.

Defying expectations, Rupert's world took a turn not towards despair, but towards hope.

Despite the fact, that he was given a maximum of seven months to live, Rupert fought on, his story and unbreakable spirit becoming a driving force behind what is being called the 100 Walk 100 Cotswold Way challenge.

SMA progressively weakens muscles and Rupert had to fight with it from a very young age.

"Rupert stopped moving a month after birth and it took weeks for a diagnosis because few doctors know about the condition, despite there being treatments available on the NHS which can save lives," says mum Charlie, 36, from St Albans.

"In June 2021 he became the second child in England to receive Zolgensma, the world's most expensive gene therapy treatment, at just 11 weeks old.

"This groundbreaking therapy saved Rupert’s life, halting the progression of SMA.

"Rupert works very hard every day to get stronger."

Rupert's extraordinary journey, marked by a relentless fight for life, spurred the inception of the Rally Round Rupert charity in 2023, now behind the 100-mile trek of the Cotswold Way starting on June 21 and finishing in Bath on June 23.

Through this, they aim to raise funds for clinical research and heighten awareness of SMA.

"This year, Rupert took his first step, an incredible milestone we never thought we’d get to celebrate," Charlie continued.

"Now, at 3 years old, his fight against SMA continues to inspire us all.

"His courage and determination are truly immense.

"This charity walk isn't just about raising awareness of SMA; it's about showing Rupert, and every child battling SMA, that they have a whole community cheering them on, every step of the way."
