The district council will be collecting bags of litter gathered by the public and community groups in a national clean-up campaign.

The Great British Spring Clean is taking place during the last two weeks of March.

The campaign is calling on people and community groups to tidy up their neighbourhoods and green spaces.

To be considered for the district council's collection, litter bags must be presented at a pre-agreed collection point, ensuring accessibility for the street cleansing teams.

Councillor Mike Evemy, portfolio holder for waste and recycling at Cotswold District Council, said: "We’re delighted to be supporting this incredible event again this year - the year that Keep Britain Tidy, the charity behind the Great British Spring Clean, turns seventy.

"Ultimately though, the Spring Clean is all about local communities coming together to take positive action to help rid the countryside, and our towns and villages, of the 2 million pieces of litter dropped every day in the UK."

He urged residents to make individual pledges to celebrate this milestone.

The campaigns encourage people to commit to pick up 70 pieces of litter, spend 70 minutes litter-picking or fill 70 sacks with litter.

Residents and groups can borrow litter grabbers and high-vis vests from more than 25 litter hubs in the district.

The list of litter hubs can be accessed at https://www.cotswold.gov.uk/environment/clean-and-green-cotswolds/.

In March 2023, people from across the UK pledged to pick up 400,000 bags of litter for the Great British Spring Clean.

Keep Britain Tidy estimates that annually, more than £1 billion is spent clearing the nation’s litter problem equivalent to a £35 cost per household.

A significant contributor to this problem, 75 per cent of litter by volume, stems from drink containers, specifically small plastic bottles and non-alcoholic cans, making up 43 per cent of all litter.

Residents can arrange a collection of litter bags by contacting the district council at customer.services@cotswold.gov.uk.
