Reports of a person in a river have prompted a mass emergency response in Witney. 

Police, fire and ambulance services rushed to the riverside to search the water for a person earlier today. 

Thames Valley Police, Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service and the National Police Air Service were all involved.

A drone was also used in the operation.

No one has been found but Thames Valley Police said enquiries are ongoing.

A spokesperson for the force's rural crime taskforce said: "PC Uren, PC Little, and PC Tillyer assisted response officers, Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue, and the ambulance in a report of a person in the river in Witney.

"PC Uren and PC Little utilised the drone alongside NPAS . At this time, no-one has been found.

"Enquiries are ongoing."

A spokesman for Thames Valley Police told the Oxford Mail: "We received a report of a person in the river and we are at the scene conducting searches."

Eyewitnesses have said the emergency services were by the river west of the leisure centre in Witan Way.

People living in Witney have expressed their concerns in response to the emergency services rushing to the river. 

One comment from Claire Claridge said: "Hopefully all are safe." 

South Central Ambulance Service has been contacted for comment. 

It comes after emergency services including armed police rushed to the Waitrose store off Oxford's Botley Road in November. 

This was described by police at the time as a "fear for welfare" incident.
