Volunteers are needed to join a community speedwatch scheme in Witney.

Community Speedwatch allows trained volunteers to monitor the speed of passing vehicles using a hand-held speed detection device.

It is a national initiative which aims to raise awareness of the dangers of speeding and helps to control the problem locally.

Their findings are reported to police, who are funding the scheme, who write a ‘polite letter’ to discourage a repeat.

Councillor Andrew Coles, chair of the Witney Traffic Advisory Committee, said: "Concerns about speeding and road safety are one of the biggest issues residents raise with us as a committee.

"We've listened to those concerns and are pleased to be working with Witney Town Council and Thames Valley Police to help make our streets safer.

"We are currently seeking local volunteers to offer small amounts of time for the benefit of our community.

"The scheme aims to keep our roads safe for all road users by supporting the police to help educate drivers. It also enables them to prioritise their resources where they are most needed in our community.

"We are aiming to initially focus our efforts on roads close to local schools.

"Community Speedwatch schemes operate in many other local areas and have proven to be effective - we are delighted to be bringing it to Witney."

In July 2022 Witney became the first town in Oxfordshire to pilot a large-scale speed reduction to 20mph, funded by Oxfordshire County Council.
