Residents were blown away by a spectacular fireworks display held as part of wedding celebrations that lit up the surrounding sky and could be heard a whopping FIFTEEN miles away.

The display was part of a wedding party on Saturday February 18 at The Wychwood Golf Club in Lyneham near Chipping Norton.

Lights and explosions were seen and heard in Chipping Norton, Burford, Charlbury, Hailey, Finstock, Ramsden, North Leigh, Stonesfield and Milton-under-Wychwood.

A firework-induced rumbling was even heard up to 14 miles away in central Witney.

Organisers said low cloud and strong winds had allowed the sound to travel across long distances.

As the 15-minute display got going accompanied by Holding Out For A Hero by Bonnie Tyler chat groups lit up all over West Oxfordshire.

Some described the noise as like ‘thunder’, ‘an explosion’ and another said their windows ‘were shaking in their frames’.

A Milton resident said: “It was a very long and obviously very expensive fireworks display which we could clearly see from our window and worth of London on New Year’s Eve!

"We wondered if it was an expensive wedding but definitely from Churchill direction.”

Another in Milton-under-Wychwood said: "They were certainly spectacular I thought we’d missed the coronation or some major event."

People in Woodgreen in Witney asked: "Was it fireworks?? They were huge."

In Hailey: "Wondering the same!"

In West End and Hailey Road, one poster said: "It sounded like thunder to me."

"Heard them in Witney High St after 7:15 pm like distant thunder," said a third.

"Yes quite a few dog walkers mentioned it in North Leigh thought it was an explosion!! My dog was scared but haven't got a clue where it was," said a startled villager.

"Wow! I heard them in Burford!" said another.

However, some unimpressed posters described the event as 'extreme' while others complained that only residents of Lyneham had been warned.

"Well we need to know when they get divorce as the fireworks will be extremely bad. So we can prepare," joked one villager.

Illusion Fireworks confirmed " the 15 minute professional fireworks display choreographed to music was designed and executed to our clients' specification by our award winning fireworks display team".

"Sound from the display carried further than usual due to a low cloud base and strong winds that night," a spokesperson said.

"A firework display at your wedding is in our opinion the only way to end your big day, nothing comes close to telling the world you are celebrating than showing off with an unforgettable and spectacular wedding fireworks display."

They added: "Residents and businesses in the immediate area were informed by the venue including the nearby Lyneham Heath Equestrian Centre and Cotswold Canine Athletics, both of which provided a positive initial response and afterwards incredible feedback about the display.

"The venue was selected by our client due to its remote location and suitability for a large fireworks display."
