Peter Townsend from Bourton on the Water, aged 24, will be going on a charity expedition to Canada with the British Exploring Society (BES) in July.

The society’s expeditions take young people aged 16-25 from different backgrounds to remote locations to undertake projects with content relevant to their lives.

This trip to Kluane National Park in Yukon combines Peter’s two passions; meteorology and exploring.

Peter said: “As a junior meteorologist, I hope to complete a project to research and learn for myself the impacts of the changing climate and weather extremes on the Yukon.”

A BBC Radio 4 appeal in November and support from a NHS Let's Talk Glos mental health therapist motivated him to apply to this expedition.

He added: “I want to take this opportunity to join BES for my family and the people who have helped and supported me with my mental health over the last year, to hopefully rediscover the things I used to love doing and took for granted, and to improve my self-belief and confidence.”
