Birdland Park and Gardens has reopened following the deaths of two penguins.

The popular tourist attraction in Bourton was temporarily shut after two Humboldt penguins died.

Birdland closed on New Year's eve and New Year's day whilst investigations got underway to determine if the deaths were connected to Avian flu.

All of the tests carried out on the park's other penguins came back negative and as such, Birdland will reopen today - Monday, January 2.

A staff member said: "We are pleased to announce that the park and gardens will reopen to the public from Monday, January 2 (10am).

"Following the recent deaths of two Humboldt penguins, we took the decision to close as a precautionary measure whilst tests for Avian Flu were carried out on our other penguins."

Parts of the park and feeding experiences will remain off-limits to visitors for the time being.

"All tests were negative, however Penguin Shore will remain isolated for a further six days and our popular feeding experiences will be cancelled until further notice," added the staff member.

"Heras fencing has been put up around the penguin enclosure temporarily. All other areas of the park and gardens will be open as normal."

News of Birdland's reopening has been welcomed by guests, who were left devastated by the sudden deaths of the two penguins.

Helen Pike, who sells books at Shalom the Rainbow Shop in Bourton, said: "We are so so thrilled that the tests were all negative and you can welcome us back.

"Prayers for a healthy, happy and successful 2023 for staff and residents."

A team member for Cotswold First Aid added: "Very sad to lose two penguins but relieved for everyone else it was not as expected."

And Claire Jayes, a visitor of the park, said: "Sad the Humboldts passed but so very pleased to hear it wasn't avian flu.

"We were very lucky to visit before you had to close. A lovely place to visit."
