Disused garages have been transformed into new homes.

Rooftop Housing has turned a site previously occupied by 92 redundant garages on Bishops Drive, Bishops Cleeve, into 11 affordable homes.

The Evesham-based housing association is hopeful the development can tackle anti-social behaviour and help the area meet housing demands.

Rooftop’s head of development Mark Ramdehal said: “We endeavour to ensure that our customers and local residents feel safe in the community and enjoy their surroundings.

“Developing this garage site into new and high-quality affordable homes is a move to tackle such antisocial behaviour and regenerate the area.”

The development forms part of Rooftop’s masterplan and vision for the development and regeneration of Bishops Cleeve’s redundant garage courts.

Hemingway Design and Birmingham-based architects TKA Space Studio were hired to design the transformation.

After Tewkesbury Borough Council approved the planning last year, Gloucester-based building contractor Aqua Construction was appointed following a competitive tendering process to construct and deliver the scheme.

The 11 homes include four one-bedroom flats, four two-bedroom houses and three three-bedroom houses.

Four of these homes will be for social rent with the remaining for shared ownership.

Rooftop say that the homes have been constructed to the ‘Rooftop Living Homes Standard’ with a fabric-first approach supplemented by Photo-Voltaic (PV) panels resulting in warm, highly energy-efficient homes with an EPC energy rating of A.

“We are delighted with the quality and design of these new homes built on brownfield land,” said David Hannon, Rooftop Housing Group’s executive director of investment.

“These homes achieve the highest level of energy performance and provide space standards that are amongst the best for local people for rent and shared ownership.

“This is another example of Rooftop investing in the Smiths Estate, an estate built for the staff of the famous Smiths and Son (Cheltenham) Ltd, makers of clocks, automotive and aircraft instruments.”
