A SECOND World War nurse living at a Worcestershire care home received more than 100 birthday cards as she became a centenarian.

Beryl French reached her milestone 100th birthday earlier this month, marking the occasion with a party at her home, Brompton House Care Home in Broadway.

Sharing her secret to a long life, she said: “Staying positive and happy, my family being close and enjoying every day.”

Beryl was born in Nottingham on July 21, 1922, and spent her younger years working as a hairdresser.

As she approached her late teens she began working as a nurse, looking after wounded soldiers during the Second World War.

She married and had two children, Jayne and Lynn, who came to visit her at Brompton House on August 1 for a birthday party during which she opened a very special card from the Queen herself.

But Her Majesty’s card was only the tip of the iceberg, as Beryl received 100 cards made by children at the local school.

Beryl added: “I can't believe that I am 100! I am very happy and content.”

Jinu Thomas, care home manager at Brompton House, said: “It was an amazing celebration and such a privilege to be able to celebrate with Beryl and all her friends and fellow Residents here at Brompton House.

“These moments are cherished by all involved and we can't wait for her 101st birthday next year!”
