EVERYBODY concerned with Evesham United will be hoping thirteen doesn't prove unlucky in their quest to claim the Southern League Division One Midlands Championship.

The table topping Robins still have 13 games remaining following Tuesday night's postponement against Stourbridge and wins against Bedworth at St George's Lane on Saturday and at Chesham United on Tuesday will make it a perfect February for Paul West's men.

United have won all five games this month and eight in total in succession to lift them seven points clear of closest rivals Leamington.

Even with a such a big lead at the top, the Robins' chief is still not talking about lifting the crown.

"We are in a fantastic position and just trying to win as many of those remaining games as we can," West admitted. "We can't talk about winning titles."

Evesham last suffered defeat on New Year's Day when they went down 1-0 at home to Bishop's Cleeve, and while West is eyeing as getting as many points as he can between now and April 26, another setback holds no fears.

"Last season we were a little concerned about getting beat, but this year we have won 21 out of the 27 games," West added. "We don't fear getting beat this year, because look at what happened after our last one."

Danny Scheppel would have missed the midweek match had it survived the overnight frost and the United manager will be hoping the midfield man's knee injury improves enough to allow him to take his place in the side this weekend.

Daniel Lennon, who scored within two minutes of replacing Scheppel last Saturday, is likely to keep his place while West will also be hoping that Michael Hayden will also be fit after suffering a dead leg against Leighton.

Anthony Watson, who replaced Hayden last Saturday, will be needed in central defence to fill in for the suspended Steven Hands so West's resources could be stretched with only Lorcan Sheehan, Allando Davis, James Knott and Paul Bonar, if fit, to call on should Scheppel and Hayden fail to make it.

One familiar face will be available to face Aylesbury United on March 1 when Simon Fitter's re-registration will be completed following his return from Stourport Swifts for whom he made three appearances.

Saturday's match is being sponsored by Tonnies Fleisch of Spalding and the ball by Simcron of West Bromwich.

There's a coach going to Chesham on Tuesday, leaving the High Street at 4pm. Ring Mike Peplow on 01684 561770 to reserve your seat.
