An Oxford MP has slammed Boris Johnson’s trade deal with Europe as “botched”, stating it has sold many industries “down the river”.

In a Twitter thread posted today, Oxford West and Abingdon MP Layla Moran tweeted said: “Boris Johnson’s botched trade deal with Europe has sold farmers, small businesses, fishing communities, scientists, musicians and so many more down the river.

“That’s why Liberal Democrats voted against it in Parliament in December 2020. (1/6).

“And since then, we have set out a four stage comprehensive roadmap to connect with Europe, strengthening ties and deepening the trading relationship. (2/6)

“1). Stop going backwards - which is the reality of our situation - and start with straightforward areas of cooperation, like Erasmus, to start building up trust. (3/6)

“2). Seeking membership of important agencies and associations, to establish cooperation on subjects from crime to climate to chemicals. (4/6)

“3). Deepening the trading relationship - aiming for equivalence agreements for financial services, SPS standards, and low cost, fast-tracked work visas. This is critical for the economy. (5/6)

“4). Once the ties of trust have been renewed and the trade relationship deepened, the opportunity should arise to boost the economy by applying to join the Single Market. (6/6)”

The Lib Dem MP then linked Liberal Democrats Online Spring Conference document from March 2022.

In this document, the party states: “Boris Johnson’s Brexit is failing to deliver any benefits for Britain. It bears no resemblance to the promises made by the Leave campaign in 2016.”
