A PUB in Shipston has been named the best boozer in the county.

The George Townhouse has been recognised as Warwickshire’s pub of the year as part of the 2022 National Pub and Bar Awards.

Fending off competition from more than 500 taprooms which entered the awards, the pub was named as one of 94 county winners on April 13.

General manager Matthew Hiscoe is delighted with the prize.

He said: “We are so excited to be named as the best pub in Warwickshire by the National Pub and Bar Awards 2022.

“We’ve worked hard to make the George the ‘go to’ pub locally, whether you want a quick drink, a leisurely meal, or an overnight stay.”

Each entry was judged on a range of criteria including interior design, outside space, customer service, menus and drinks lists.

The George Townhouse, a Grade II listed building on Shipston’s High Street, recently underwent an interior revamp with Georgian features throughout being restored.

The pub features a 40-cover Pantry restaurant, a private dining space, a garden room overlooking the patio, and a large, open, bar with a range of cask ales, wines and gins.

It also serves as a hotel, with 15 bedrooms.

The National Pub and Bar Awards aim to put a spotlight on businesses across the county as consumer confidence builds and hospitality venues continue to recover from the pandemic.

Tristan O’Hana, editor of Pub and Bar magazine which runs the awards, said: “This is an industry that never stands still – the operators of the best pubs have to be at the top of their game 100 per cent of the time.

“Our 94 County Winners are shining examples of that energy and creativity. They are what makes the pubs and bars of the UK so renowned.

“The team at the George Townhouse are to be congratulated.”
