A fatal crash has prompted a town discussion on heavy goods vehicles.

A public meeting will be held at Chipping Norton Town Hall this evening following the death of Derek Thornton, a retired factory worker living in the town.

Mr Thornton, 73, died at the scene when he was struck by an HGV at the junction of the A44 High Street and A361 West Street on February 28.

Now, members of the public have the chance to share their concerns with town and county councillors.

A statement from Chipping Norton Town Council reads: “In light of the recent tragic incident in the town centre, Chipping Norton Town Councillors have arranged a public meeting and conversation with Duncan Enright, County Cabinet Member for Travel and Development Strategy.

“It will be a chance for Chippy residents to voice their concerns about HGVs in Chipping Norton, and to propose changes moving forward.

“Chipping Norton Town Council would welcome and encourage all residents to come have their say on this very important topic.

“Cllr Geoff Saul, Chipping Norton’s elected member for Oxfordshire County Council will also be in attendance.”

The meeting will start at 6:30pm and finish at 7:10pm, before the full council meeting begins.

The meeting will finish promptly at 7:10pm in order that the scheduled Full Council meeting can commence at 7:15pm.

A full inquest into Mr Thornton’s death will be held later this year, on September 30.
