Worcester has been named among the UK cities that take the most pride in their neighbourhoods.

Builders merchant Buildworld looked at a number of factors including the quality of local parks, council expenditure on environmental services and the number of Britain in Bloom groups in an area to work out which cities have the most neighbourhood pride.

Worcester came eighth on the list, four places ahead of Hereford, while Birmingham and Wolverhampton were ranked 30th and 32nd respectively.

Preston in Lancashire came top of the list, followed by Exeter in Devon and St Albans in Hertfordshire.

“The towns and cities in which we live can become part of our identity, with people taking a great deal of pride in their neighbourhoods,” said Buildworld in its report.

“Whether it's in the community spirit, the effort to go green or even the cleanliness of the area, there are many things that can help residents feel proud of the place they live in.

“At Buildworld, we like to help people feel proud of their homes but we want to know where people take the most pride in their communities and neighbourhoods.

“With this in mind, we looked at a number of factors in cities around the UK to find out which places have the most neighbourhood pride.”

Buildworld ranked the cleanliness of green spaces and parks by taking user-submitted scores from Numbeo, a cost of living database.

It also took the number of times the phrase ‘recycling near me’ had been Googled in each city between December 2020 and November 2021 to come up with a recycling score.

Cities were also given scores based on the percentage of its local council’s budget that was spent on environmental and regulatory services, and how many Britain in Bloom or It’s Your Neighbourhood groups it has.
