Cotswold Wildlife Park was closed again today due to the snow.

It was also forced to close at the weekend due to Storm Arwen.

The Burford wildlife park is usually open year-round - with the exception of Christmas Day.

The park posted on Facebook: “To ensure the safety of our staff and visitors, Cotswold Wildlife Park is closed today (Monday 29 November 2021) due to extreme weather conditions. We will keep you updated with any announcements on our Facebook page, Instagram and Twitter feed.”

They added they would get in touch if you have booked an Animal Encounter, Keeper For A Day or Junior Keeper Experience and there would be refunds or tickets to use on another day.

“Thank you for your patience and understanding.”

However, one potential visitor reacted with scorn.

Eliska Vyskočova replied: “You call half inch of snow extreme conditions? Really?”

Many understood the situation, however, saying the decision was the right one.

Michelle Cook posted: "I'm guessing they are not opening as it's very icy out. They would want to protect their visitors. They wouldn't close for no reason , they need all the revenue they can get, after these past 20 months."

Jordan Hands said: "Half the animals would be tucked away in there barns/houses so it would be a wasted journey."

And Christine French added: "Accidents can happen in this ice. They are thinking of visitors safety. My road is like an ice rink."

Reggie Heyworth, managing director of the Cotswold Wildlife Park, said: “The roads around us are absolutely treacherous. We looked at the weather forecast and there was no prospect of the roads being safe by the time we open at 10am.

“We have to take the decision by 8am at the latest to inform our staff.”

He said it would have been “completely irresponsible” to open the park as "you couldn’t see the car park" and the long drive was icy.

“We are all being asked not to unduly burden the NHS at the moment. If people coming here had had an accident I would be feeling very, very guilty," he said.

“Of course I would have loved to open – we had to close at Easter because of the pandemic. And I understand if people are staying here and there is one day that they can visit the park – all they have to do is talk to us and we will give a full refund or a ticket to use on another day.

“I think people would agree with me on the whole.”
