‘Outstanding’ - that was the verdict on this year’s Stow-on-the-Wold Flower and Produce Show.

The show, staged by Spring Gardens Allotment Association, attracted more than 140 entries.

The Association Chairman, Chris Small said: ‘I think the show was outstanding. Full marks to everyone who took part because it’s been such a difficult growing season this year.  All the exhibits at this year’s show were good enough to be entered in any show.

‘Most of our entries came from allotment holders but next year we’re hoping to attract more people from the town and surrounding villages.

‘Showing flowers, veg and baking is a lot of fun and I’m thrilled that we had such a terrific show this year.’

St Edward’s Hall was packed with flowers, pot plants, cakes and jams. The vegetable section had long leeks, gorgeous garlic, beautiful beetroot and scrumptious salad.

Grower Rob Jeffries regained his title as Show Champion and also picked up the honours for Best Flowers.

Wendy Wastnidge was Baking Champion, John Hayes was the top vegetable grower and Sybil Ruscoe won the Floral Art title and Best Exhibit in Show with her teacup arrangement entitled ‘Spilling Over Into Autumn’.

Rob said: ‘It’s not been a very good growing year at all but it means so much to win after coming second for a couple of years. It’s a lot of hard work but my dad was a gardener and what he did has really stuck with me.’

Jam and scone queen, Wendy said: ‘It was brilliant to win. I’m not really a great cake baker so I’m chuffed to pieces.’

John added: ‘It’s really great to see all your hard work appreciated.’

For Sybil, winning was a big surprise: ‘I couldn’t believe it when my name was read out as a winner,’ she said.  ‘The show was fantastic and a great showcase for all that digging on our allotments.’

The show was held on Saturday, August 28 at St Edward’s Hall.
