LORRIES delivering to Tesco in Moreton are causing headaches for local people.

Town councillors meeting on Monday heard that many townspeople had complained about the huge lorries, which have difficulties getting access to the Tesco Express store in the town's High Street and often block the road.

Councillor Ben Jeffrey, who recently met Tesco representatives to find a solution to the problem, said: "They are here and they've got to be accommodated somehow."

One of the options being considered is to remove town council-owned parking spaces alongside the Redesdale Hall to enable the lorries to have more space to park.

However, Cllr Rod Hooper said: "Are we going to let this happen because Tesco want to bring a lorry in that's too big for our town?

"We are going out of our way for one shop alone, a shop that came into this town and never even thought about consulting us."

Cllr Josie Burford-Lane said that double yellow lines could be put alongside the pavement from the Co-op on the corner to beyond Tesco so that parked cars would not cause problems for lorries delivering.

"That would be a lot easier for lorries and coaches," said Cllr Burford-Lane.

Cllr Hooper said that the matter should be dealt with alongside the other parking issues in the town.

"It needs a meeting with everybody concerned," he added.

Councillors agreed to have a further meeting about the parking and traffic problems but Cllr Jeffrey warned: "It has taken four years to make up our minds. Are we going to go on another four years or are we going to do something immediately?"
