As we count down the days towards Christmas, many of us will be wondering what we can expect from the festive season this year. It will surely be different, but just how different will be down to each of us and our actions in the coming weeks.

The good news is that, thanks to the hard work, sacrifices, and the care you have shown already for the wider community, new cases in South Gloucestershire are slowing and the infection rate is beginning to fall. But they are both still too high.

On Wednesday (2 December), our area was moved into the new Tier 3 (Very High alert). The Government’s decision was based on criteria including data about the number of cases and the current pressure on our local and regional health and social care services. South Gloucestershire has above average case rates overall, and there is a high level of cases in the over 60s.

While moving into Tier 3 has allowed for some easing of the lockdown restrictions, the new rules mean we mustn’t meet socially indoors or in most outdoor places with anybody we don’t live with, or who is not in our support bubble (this includes in any private garden or most outdoor venues). We also can’t socialise in a group of more than six in other outdoor public spaces, such as parks. Unfortunately, pubs, bars, restaurants, cafés and other hospitality settings remain closed, although they can operate click and collect and takeaway services. You can read the new rules in full on our website beta.southglos.gov.uk/local-restriction-tiers-and-south-gloucestershire

In the run up to Christmas, traditionally a time spent with family and friends, I know these rules go against the grain. It will be extremely difficult for many residents, and for business sectors such as hospitality. But if we all continue to follow the guidance and play our part, and the numbers of Covid-19 cases continues to come down, we have the chance to be reassessed for a lower tier on 16th December.

The road ahead is tough, but the good health of our loved ones will surely be the best possible Christmas gift- and one worth making sacrifices for now. I hope very much too that we’ll be able to ‘all rejoice again, on Christmas Day in the morning,’ just as the carol says.
