The improvements were made to Pump Street in Worcester, as part of the wider Town Centre Improvement Programme.

The main scheme objectives were:

  • improvement of street aesthetics.
  • improvement of footfall, time spent in the street and encouraging of non-vehicular transport.
  • improvement of safety for non-vehicular transport.

There are still a few finishing touches to be made over the coming weeks, including the installation of the new trees and updates to the street lighting.

Councillor Ken Pollock, Worcestershire County Council's Cabinet Member with Responsibility for Economy and Infrastructure, said: "Although it’s been tough over the past few months, the team working on these improvements has forged ahead very impressively. “These improvements have smartened up the area and although you may currently see some marks on the surface, these will soon fade as the surface beds in.

“Once all the work is completed, it’ll certainly provide a much more attractive area for both local businesses and people visiting.”

The works include the installation of new footways and the resurfacing of the carriageway in coloured tarmac to provide safer routes for all users during periods when vehicles are permitted to access the street.

Nikolao Tamsin, Manager at The Eagle Vaults, said: “I’ve been really impressed with how quickly and how well the scheme has come together, and It’s pleasing to see the street re-opening again.

“Once it is completed, I think it’ll really compliment the work done at the neighbouring Shambles shopping area. It’s been great for us to be opening up again alongside other local businesses and people out and about making the most of Worcester city centre has to offer.”
