A flood alert has been issued in Cumbria as heavy rain continues to batter the county.

The Environment Agency alert for Rivers Caldew and Petteril is the lowest level but states flooding is possible - be prepared.

A statement for the Environment Agency said: " River levels are forecast to rise at the Cummersdale river gauge as a result of persistent rainfall throughout the day.

"Consequently, flooding of roads and farmland is possible from 9.30pm.

"Flooding is expected to affect low lying land and roads in the Millhouse, Caldbeck, Sebergham, Ivegill, Stockdalewath, Dalston, Cummersdale, Denton Holme, Greystoke, Plumpton, Upperby and Harraby Green areas.

"High river levels are possible on the River Caldew, Cald Beck, River Ive, River Roe, North Petteril, River Petteril and their tributaries.

"We are closely monitoring the situation.

"Please avoid using low lying footpaths near rivers."
