When the film What we do in the Shadows was released in 2014, few people outside of the support of creators Jermaine Clement and Taika Waititi would have known what to expect.

And when it became a cult hit, the well-trodden path of a transfer to the small screen soon followed with a brand new cast, and again people may not have known what to expect.

But the British trio of Kayvan Novak (Four Lions), Matt Berry (Toast) and the breakout star of the show Natasia Demetriou (Stath Lets Flats) soon allayed any fears as they delivered a brilliant first outing.

And the bar was raised when the trio, portraying New York vampires Nandor, Laslo and Nadja, returned, with a bit more of the energy-sapping vampire Colin Robinson and Nandor’s human familiar Guillermo, for a second series on the BBC iPlayer.

As a latecomer to their travails, I was hooked immediately with Berry not straying far from his booming-voiced trademark, while Novak brings out a vulnerable side to a bloodthirsty old warrior.

There are some epic comic turns too – but it is Demetriou who rules the roost, and owns every scene she is in.

Played for an adult audience and including a Mark Hammill cameo, What We Do In The Shadows is streaming on iPlayer now.
