RUTHIN Farmers' Auction reports sales of 1,250 prime lambs to 221.4ppk / £98; 491 cull ewes and rams to £75 and four prime heifers to 237ppk / £1,271.70.

New season lambs:

Less lambs were about during the week following very big entries of 9,030 lambs in total the previous week.

An excellent trade throughout returned an SQQ of 187.1ppk.

All types and weights were in keen demand.

More lambs are required on Fridays.

The top priced heifer overall was £1,271.70, again by R L Wynne, Ty Newydd.

Overall heifers average 232.5p.

NEW season lambs (2,043):

THERE was a smaller entry due to the recent trade and the local show, resulting in a sharper trade and more lambs could have been sold.

Top price Standard - 251p/kg shown by G Davies, Bron Llan and £84/head shown by the same vendor.

Mold primestock sale - August 12

BEEF trade was slightly firmer, with a good number forward.

There was an excellent entry of cull cows, whch saw another blistering trade.

Lambs were also in line with other centres.

Ruthin store and breeding stock sale - August 8

RUTHIN Farmers' Auction reports sales of seven cows and calves; 30 store cattle; four OTM cattle to £1,193.50; 84 calves; two dairy cattle to £1,670; 763 store lambs to £101 and 149 breeding ewes to £102.

Calves (auctioneer: Dafydd Parry):

There was a very good entry of 84 calves seeing an excellent trade throughout, with new buyers present again and a lot of buyers gathered looking for all types of calves.

Topping the day was a 4 week old Limousin calf from Aberdaron achieving £355 and selling to the Bala area.

The same vendor also had a 4 week old British Blue bull calf selling for £340.

There was a consignment of 4-6 week old British Blue heifer and bull calves from a local vendor in keen demand, selling between £200 and £300.

Friesian bull calves were selling to £60 with competitive bidding.

Six week old Aberdeen angus x calves sold for £210 to Anglesey.

More calves could have been sold, with buyers looking for more on a weekly basis.

Buyers range from Anglesey to Gwynedd, Cheshire, Shropshire and even Worcestershire.

The auction is expecting a large number of calves on a weekly basis.

Monthly calf competition:

Ruthin Farmers Auction has teamed up with Genus to run a monthly competition within the weekly calf section to win Genus vouchers.

The vendor with the highest priced calf - 1 month old and under sired by a Genus bull during each month - will be awarded a £50 voucher to spend on agricultural products.

The winner of the July competition was J W & T A Davies, Peniarth Fawr, Betws yn Rhos who will receiving the voucher for £50 from Genus.

Store cattle (auctioneers: Emyr Lloyd and Glyn Owens):

Heifers:

Of the heifer entries, a 32 month old Hereford x heifer from D R & I Griffiths, Waen achieved £800.

Meanwhile, 25m Limousin heifers were to £770.

Steers:

There was a good entry of steers topping at £1,240 for strong 26m old British Blue from M A Evans, Tan yr Accar.

The same holding also had a lot of 3 BB steers (24-25 months) achieving £1,205.

Also achieving one of the highest prices of the day was a consignment of Charolais x steers (22-25 months) achieving £1085-£1180 respectively.

A bunch of Limousin steers (9-15 months) were sold together and achieved £870.

There a good general trade, with an increase in numbers expected each week through the autumn.

OTM:

48 month Limousin cows were selling to £1,193.50 and 94 month Limousin to £897.60.

Cows and calves:

Seven cows with calves at foot were forward.

A 34 month British Blue 1st calver with bull calf at foot achieved £1,200, a 20m Limousin heifer with heifer calf sold for £1,110 and a 30m Hereford x cow with an Aber Angus x heifer calf was to £1,000.

Sheep section:

Store lambs (auctioneer: Elfor Morris):

There was an excellent entry again of 871 store lambs, a continuation of a strong start to the season.

A pen of very shapely Blue Texel ewe lambs achieved £101.

Texel ram lambs topped at £70; Suffolk ram lambs to £65; Welsh lambs to £38; Cross Bred lambs to £43.50; Mule lambs to £59.

Breeding ewes:

There was a good entry for the time of year, with large entries received as per usual over the next few weeks.

Texel full mouth ewes sold for £102; Suffolk ewes to £94; Mule yearling ewes to £90; Lleyn ewes to £86.

Mold stock sale - August 9

ANOTHER decent sale and entry for early August.

Cattle remained in demand, with many buyers going home empty handed.

Dairy was in demand again, with quality commanding a real premium, the top reaching 2120.

Calves in greater demand, with more buyers ringside.

Welshpool market - August 12

BARREN and cull cows (17):

A similar number of OTM cattle were on offer compared to the previous week, seeing a top price of £1160.22 (122ppkg) for a British Blue x OTM weighing in at 951kg from J & M Gethin, Tyn Y Rhos.

TH Williams & Son, Pentre Farm made 139ppkg for a Charolais x weighing 752kg making £1045.28.

Younger cows (48-72 months) topped at £686.72 (116ppkg) for a Limousin x weighing 592kg from JE Owen & Co, Gilfach.

GG Williams, West Fedw made 119ppkg for a Salers x weighing 525kg making £624.75.

Heifers under 48 months topped at £958.92 (131ppkg) for a heifer weighing 732kg from TT Jones & Son, Glyn.

A Rowlands & Son, Noyadd Fach made 175ppkg for a British Blue heifer weighing 519kg making £908.25.

Averages of the day were as follows:

Prime lambs (4,454):

A smaller entry of lambs forward sold to return an average of 173.61ppkg, with a top price of 220ppkg for pen of lambs weighing 41kg making £90 from H & E Powell, Llwyngwilym, and £97.50/head for 47kg lambs from S Smith, Pentre Farm Cottage.

A larger than expected entry, after the Muslim festival, sold to as expected a slower trade throughout.

With a few of the regular buyers not requiring any lambs, trade for all weights and grades was still quite competitive.

Most demand was for the better quality, export weight (39-45kg) lambs

which consistently sold to around and above 200ppkg.

Heavier weight lambs, including tups, sold to a reduced trade compared to the previous week, however the better quality types still sold to above £90 per head.

Well meated lighter weight lambs were also in decent demand.

Most difficult to sell on the day were the poorer / hillbred lambs in the 44-50kg supermarket weight range.

As this slower trade will reduce numbers coming forward and with the end of the Muslim festival, hopefully prices will increase in the near future.

Cull sheep (1,797):

The week saw a reduced entry of 1,747 cull ewes that met a steadier trade as expected with the recent Muslim festival affecting some abattoirs from running.

However, 10 individual buyers were present once again with a few new buyers present looking for grazing ewes.

The overall average was £46.78 (-£3.37 on the week) with a top price of £106 being achieved by LH Morgan, Penglanowen Farm, closely followed by TK Robinson, Ty Newydd that sold ewes for £102.

The plainer and smallest ewes were the hardest sold during the week.

A total of 66 cull rams were on offer at the sale, with a top price of £70 going to DG & E Williams, Wern.

Texel ewes to £106; Beltex ewes to £97; Mule ewes to £70; Welsh ewes to £58.

Store lambs (294):

A larger entry of store lambs was seen compared to the previous week and this met with a sharp trade.

Prices peaked at £66.80 and averaged £52.55.

Leading the way was a pen of Texel tup lambs from IP Jones, Llangwm selling for £66.80 with a £49.11 average.

Mixed and clean lambs reached £61.50 from Texel x from CP & VW Andrew & Son, Bronfedw.

An entry of 52 theave lambs peaked at £62 for Texel x from FR Williams, Cefncanol.

A small entry of wether lambs peaked at £65 for Texel x from S Lane, New Hall.

Averages: Theave lambs £52.65; Mixed & clean £60.75; Wether £64.04; Mixed & tups £54.

Breeding ewes:

An entry of 500 ewes sold to an improved trade with new faces surrounding the ring.

An ongoing reduction from Messrs Tudor, Llysun saw Texel 4 year old ewes to £128 and £120, and Mule 4 year old ewes to £126 and £122.

Aged Suffolk ewes peaked at £105 from Ty Llwyd Farms, Goytre.

An impressive run of 100 yearling ewes from I Jones, Bromebyd saw Beltex x hit £170, Texel hit £151 and Mules to £158.

The best Texel yearlings peaked at £162 from HE Pugh, Grove Farm with Suffolk yearlings to £142 from G Morgan, Cae Garreg.
