A FUN day in Halesowen held as part of the Black Country Festival celebrations has been hailed a success.

Organisers said 30,000 shoppers visited the Cornbow Centre on Saturday - up on the usual 25,000 visitors usually recorded on a Saturday.

They said the fun day, featuring a host of entertainment including wrestling, music and comedy from the Fizzogs, attracted shoppers into the town.

The day was billed as a tribute to Halesowen's legendary funnyman Tommy Mundon.

It was a whole weekend of events in the town as on Sunday thousands of runners took part in the Black Country Road Run, around Halesowen town centre.

BID manager Vicky Rogers said: "The fun day was brilliant - the sun made it, although I felt sorry for the Fizzogs dressed in woolly tights and jumpers.

"Billy Spakemon performed the comedy and sang traditional black country songs.

"We were also joined by the black Country buskers who were raising money for charity.

"The Saleem Foundation and Halesowen and Rowley Regis Rotary Club were there to help promote the dementia-friendly Halesowen campaign that they are involved with along with the BID.

"Singer Mark Young perfomed and the Fizzogs who as always were extremely entertaining.

"The wrestling was a hit with everyone too.

"It was a fantastic day. The Cornbow Centre had 30,000 visitors that day."

Cornbow Centre manager Eve O'Connor said the day was a great success.

She said the centre has around 25,000 visitors on an average Saturday but 30,000 people passed through on Saturday. She said on Sunday when the Black Country Road Run was in the town - it had 16,000 visitors, up on the usual average of 11,000.
