BARTON-on-the-Heath's St Lawrence Church is hosting a thanksgiving service following vital roof repairs.

The treasured 12th century church, near Moreton, was awarded Heritage Lottery funding amounting to around £300,000 in total.

Two thirds of the amount had been awarded from the Heritage Lottery fund while the remaining £100 was secured from charity funding and local money-raising events.

Rain water was leaking in the Grade II listed building which is on the list of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest.

The roof, which was in a state of collapse, was repaired along with the rafters replaced and a new set of stone roof tiles.

Work began in July 2014 and has now been completed. The repairs are to be celebrated during a service of thanksgiving on Sunday, April 10, at 6pm. The service will be conducted by the Venerable John Green, archdeacon pastor of the Coventry diocese.

Church warden Hamith Cathie said it was wonderful to know the church will be preserved for many more generations to enjoy.

"It has been a huge effort by a lot of people to organise the fundraising and we especially thank everyone involved and for the charities, organisations and people who have donated.

"We especially wish to thank Carol and David Brown, secretary and treasurer of St Lawrence Church, for all the hard work they have done."
