A WINCHCOMBE business owner said she has received “phenomenal” support from the public following a row over her pink paint job.
Jan Minett, owner of Cake and Sugarcraft Boutique, in North Street, was told to repaint the front of the shop after Tewkesbury Borough Council said the eye-catching colour was inappropriate.
Mrs Minett painted the shop, a former Indian restaurant, a pastel pink after moving to the premises from across the road last November.
The council advised Mrs Minett to apply for planning permission to paint it a different colour, after receiving complaints from residents.
But following the huge surge of public support for the shop and a 150 name petition backing her, the council has decided to drop the case.
“I’m very pleased,” said Mrs Minett. “I didn’t realise I needed planning to paint it and it was such an awful colour before. I didn’t think it would be a problem.
“I must have had 150 signatures from people coming in. It’s quite amazing the support. I was really pleased with that.”
Paul Skelton, control manager at Tewkesbury Borough Council, said: “In circumstances like this where permission hasn’t been sought, particularly in a conservation area, we have to decide whether it is appropriate to take action.
“Whilst the colour of the new shop front isn’t traditional and is not one we would have advised using, we have taken the view in this case that it is not unduly harmful to the character and appearance of the conservation area.”
