Cyber Security has not always been a high priority among businesses. However, with the growing threat and proven damage showing among high profile companies and services like TalkTalk, Equifax, Yahoo and even the NHS has shone light on how cyber security should be taken very seriously.

Businesses, regardless of their size, are now catching on to the notion that Cyber Security should not be a reactive practice, but rather a proactive, ongoing ambition that benefits both the business reputation and clients alike.

As Cybercrime began to emerge, it was always assumed that it is the sole responsibility of the company IT department to deal with attacks, and that they are responsible for ensuring the Cyber Security of the entire business.

However, in recent years we have seen a shift from this ideology to where Cyber Security is becoming a companywide practice – this is partially due to an increase in awareness and understanding, but equally to do with the style of attacks that occur.

Phishing is a popular and effective attack which can affect any company, and there will always be an evasive manoeuvre that allows attackers to bypass defences. With this being the case, it is down to each individual employee to ensure that they are aware of the risks with malicious emails and understand how to identify and report them.

These days, cyber security is a more widely accepted practice.

However, with the astronomical rate of digital advancement, it has made keeping up with the latest threats extremely difficult.

This is where the proactive business attitude really shines, those who learn to adapt to new technologies and actively encourage their employees to be aware of cybercrime will always be both less susceptible to cyber-attacks, but also more trustworthy to their clients.
