Awards galore for young club squads

EVESHAM youth section held their awards presentation at the town hall.

They now have around 260 players registered at under sevens to 17s level alongside a squad of younger mini players.

Next season will kick-off with a fun day on September 2 when potential new players will be welcome.

􀁥􀁥 Evesham Rugby Club’s Under 15s reached the plate semi-finals at the Bournemouth festival.

They drew 5-5 with Finchley Vikings thanks to a try from Ben Townsend before a pointless draw with Pulborough.

The group’s eventual winners Reeds Weybridge beat Evesham 20-0 but the Vale side bounced back with a 5-0 win over Tonyrefail through a Rob Smith try.

They qualified for the plate semis and drew 5-5 with a Matt Jacob try only for Cheshunt to go through after scoring first.

􀁥􀁥 Evesham Under 16s ended their season on a high with a 22-17 home victory over Old Leamingtonians.

The town team won 10 out of 23 matches this season, scoring 77 tries and 510 points.

Mike Harris’ penalty kept them in the game against Old Leamingtonians with a 10-3 deficit at the half-time interval.

But Callum Barnett, Ash Icke and Jake Shotton hit back with tries as Harris’ two conversions took them five points ahead.

􀁥􀁥 Evesham Under 12s ended their season by competing at the Leamington mini-rugby festival.

They beat Broadstreet 5-0, Old Leamingtonians 15-0 and Old Coventrians 10-5 but lost 10-0 to Rugby Lions and 15-0 to Leamington.

Will Moreland, Cormach Papirnik, Will Bugg, Zeke Evans and Jack Dempsey scored tries, while player-ofthe- tournament Will Evans was in fine form as he put in crunching tackles.

􀁥􀁥 The tag rugby team from Elmley Castle C of E First School will be playing at Twickenham after winning a competition which was hosted by Aviva Premiership side Worcester Warriors.

Year three and four pupils took part in the Aviva Premiership Rugby Schools Programme final at Sixways and they defeated Burlish Park, from Stourport, 5-4 in the final.

The team, consisting of seven boys and three girls, will now travel to Twickenham on Saturday, May 26, to play during the half-time break of the Aviva Premiership final.

Headteacher Megan Thomas said: “We have been really proud of all their tag rugby achievements over the last few months and to play at Twickenham will be something to remember for the rest of their lives.”
