NEW Worcester Warriors signing Donncha O’Callaghan believes he can play a huge role in their first season back in the Aviva Premiership.

The lock adds vital experience to the Worcester second-row along with Fiji international and fellow summer signing Tevita Cavubati.

And with competition for places across the park at Warriors, O’Callaghan insists he will do everything he can to be playing regularly and to help Warriors achieve their goals in the top flight.

He said: “I have a desire to keep playing. I want the team to be successful and I’ll do all I can to help.

“It’s a massive test for us in the Aviva Premiership but that’s why we play sport – to play on the biggest stage and you know everyone at this Club is up for the challenge.”

O’Callaghan has played 94 times for Ireland and appeared on two British and Irish Lions tours.

And the Irishman is eager to make the most of a fresh start after spending 17 years with Munster.

He said: “I’m a bit nervous to be honest.

I’ve been at one club for a long time so it feels like my first week back at school.

“The facilities at Sixways are incredible. We can take it for granted sometimes but having such good facilities makes your job a lot easier.

“I’m trying to find my way around and get up to speed with the calls and plays but thankfully there are a great bunch of guys here.”

O’Callaghan has had a busy week off the field with wife Jenny giving birth to their fourth child a day before he moved over to Worcester.

And the forward revealed his delight at having a son in his family.

He added: “Little Jake was born last week and I’m delighted he’s a boy. After three girls it will be good to have someone to play Lego and watch sport with!

“I’ve been living with Gerrit-Jan van Velze since moving over and we’ve been having barbecues every other night.

“My wife Jenny will give me some grief for not getting out and looking for a house but it’s important to get to know the lads first. All the family are looking forward to coming over and enjoying themselves.”
