WILLIAM Gearey secured second place in the Pied Piper Aquathlon at Cheltenham’s Sandford Parks Lido.

The event, in its third year, was billed as a super sprint for the nine to 10- year-old age group, comprising a 100-metre swim and 1,300m run.

Gearey, one of several rising stars from Pershore Swimming Club, faced heavy rain and blustery conditions in his first junior aquathlon, as well as several strong county swimmers from Gloucestershire. The nineyear- old from Harvington exited the water in first place with a strong time of one minute 21 seconds.

On the run, Gearey was soon overtaken by rival James Findlay and, despite chasing hard, was held off for second spot.

Findlay crossed the line in 7.06 and Gearey finished strongly to clock 7.17, five seconds ahead of the thirdplaced competitor.
