EVESHAM’S master rowers enjoyed success at Worcester’s main head of the river on the Severn.

Francis Pinkerton, Rich Evans, Norman Baldwin and Brian Hay battled against illness and stiff competition together with a strong current on the long 6,000-metre downstream course.

Starting at Camp House Inn and finishing at Diglis, the masters F coxless quad collected their pots in a winning time of 19 minutes 36 seconds, just six seconds ahead of Gloucester and 18 in front of Worcester.

Evesham juniors raced to medal positions at the South East Indoor Rowing Championships at Hinksey Sculling School.

Coach Andy Woodward said: “The club finished sixth overall out of 25 which is a good result considering the size of entries made by some clubs.”

The young athletes, ranging in age from 11 to 18, in total won nine medals.

Taking gold, J14 Sam McClenahan beat 17 other competitors to row 1,145m in four minutes while team-mate Duncan Repton rowed 1,464m, beating 19 to win in his five-minute event.

Following her victory at the British Indoor Rowing Championships in December, WJ14 Rachel Egan took silver in the four-minute event just 10m behind the winner in a field of 32 in Group C.

Silver medals went to WJ16 Ella Shalom in the two-kilometre event, young J11 Fin Warren second in a field of 19, the WJ17/18 relay team of Ella Shalom, Becca Parkin, Kate Unwin and Maddy Cross and the mixed J16 relay team of Repton, Parkin, Tom Lacey and Archie Steele.

Georgie Banton in her individual WJ15 five-minute timed event was just 38m behind silver, taking bronze.

She then took her second bronze in her relay with Poppy Cullen, Isla Grelak and Egan, 19 seconds behind the winners.
