PERSHORE Phoenix Dragon Boat Club teamed up with Henley-on-Thames to finish second overall at the National Cup final.

The two groups formed a squad of around 45 at the weekend-long event at the National Watersports Centre, Nottingham.

Competing under the Henley team name, 14 Pershore members joined two open 20 paddler teams, a mixed 20, a women's 20, a seniors 20 and a juniors 12.

The squad won silver in the Cup, the main trophy for the combined performance over the weekend, beating some good teams and missing first by only two points to the Premier League winners Amathus from Liverpool.

There were two golds for the juniors who won all three 200-metre races and their 500m contests.

The seniors took 500m silver but were disqualified from the 200m race for being too late at the start line.

The open team took three bronzes in the 200m, 500m and 2,000m disciplines.

Owen James, Ruth Hill, Pauline Young, Ellen Maddison, Terri Dacombe, Andrew Dacombe, Linda Morris, John Rabatt, Tim Plaice, Michael Dacombe and David Blackmore were among the Pershore squad members.

During the season Henley finished eighth in the Premier League and Pershore fifth in the Standard League.
