FIVE-time world champion Tony Allcock MBE was the star attraction when Broadway's Friends of Bowls England hosted a side representing the national governing body.
Allcock, the outdoor singles champion of 1992 and 1996 and the indoor champion in 1986, 1987 and 2002, played for Bowls England but finished on the losing team 114-112 at Kennel Lane.
Irrespective of the result, the legendary competitor was full of praise for the Worcestershire outfit.
"I believe this club is unique as it is the only club to my knowledge which is approached by driving through a hunt stables before arriving at the car park," said Allcock.
"The scenery surrounding the green leaves visitors under no illusion that the Cotswolds is one of England’s prized jewels. The club warmly welcomed everyone and it was clear from the outset that the green would be a joy to play on.
"The friends won the match and once again retained the perpetual Ian Woodcock Memorial claret jug. The day was a most enjoyable one and I was delighted to captain the friends at Broadway which is where I once lived and a club member some 20 years ago.
"During this short period I enjoyed several games with my late father on this beautiful green and where a BBC documentary was filmed after I won the World Singles for the first time.
"Everyone enjoyed their day in Broadway and the friendly match. The fabulous atmosphere which prevailed is indicative of what our sport is all about."
