THE Evesham and District Table Tennis Championships' finals night took place at St Egwins Middle School.

The men’s singles semi-finals saw Luke Moffat of JLM beat Nick Mytton and Littleton’s Craig Witheford win against Matt Hartwell.

Junior player Witheford was competing in his first men’s final and Moffat is a previous champion, having won the event in 2007.

Moffat won the first set 11-9 but Witheford came back to win the next three 11-9, 11-7, 16-14 and put his name on the trophy for the first and surely not the last time.

In the women’s final Lynda Reid of Bengeworth beat Rosie Phillpot of Littleton in straight sets.

Reid is the most successful player in the history of the championships, having won the title 23 times.

This year was the 40th anniversary of her first win in 1977.

Craig Witheford defended his junior boys’ title, defeating younger brother Ali Witheford in the final.

Abi Ingles is the new junior girls’ champion after beating Anna Cole 3-1.
