EVESHAM’S Hywel Jones and his playing partner Chris Martin from Sherdons near Tewkesbury scored 64 to win the men’s Invitational Trophy on countback.

Guests from 24 golf clubs throughout Worcestershire and beyond joined members to play a pairs better-ball medal format.

Conditions proved to be kinder than in recent weeks with rain having softened the course and encouraged golfers to fire at the flags.

This was reflected in the overall scoring with numerous groups breaking the par of 71.  Jones and Martin pipped long-time clubhouse leaders, club secretary Fraser Williamson and Terry Clewes from Handsworth on countback.

Third place went to Paul Heaton and David Teague from Burlish Park with 65.

The prize for best gross went to Nick Webb and Graham Tweeney from Broadway with 74.

Nearest the pin were Evesham’s Mike Callaghan and Droitwich’s Andrew Cartwright.

The longest drives were by Evesham’s Phil Day and Broadway’s Frank Meadows.

Meanwhile, Broadway ladies competed with three clubs and a putter for the Margaret Roberts Trophy.

Linda Carruthers made excellent choices with her clubs as she brought in a winning score of 36 points.

Jan Titley was a close second with 35 and just edged into third position on countback was Barbara Crew ahead of Brenda Corfield, who scored 34.

The ladies’ stableford competition was claimed by Vicky Watkins with 35 points.

Broadway juniors were busy competing in their Swain and Spoofers competition, a combination of the Mark Swain Trophy and Spoofers Cup.

William Jones earned top spot on the day with 46 points.

Joseph Golding was second with 41 points and Ryan Wright sealed third place on countback from Max Carter on 40.
