MORETON Rangers seized the initiative in the Hellenic League Division Two West title race by fighting back to win 2-1 at leaders Newent Town.

John Thomas had given the hosts the lead at Wildsmith Meadow but Moreton’s Lee Brooks plundered his 27th goal in 19 matches with Adam Shipman also on target in the turnaround.

Rangers now boast a five-match unbeaten run in second spot and trail Newent by two points but have a game in hand and a superior goal difference.

Moreton will hit the summit if they win at home to Bourton Rovers on Saturday (2pm) with Newent not in action this weekend. The reverse fixture was a 1-1 draw on February 3.

In the Witney and District League Premier Division, Chipping Norton Town won 3-2 at Carterton Town A thanks to Dan Newman, Josh Hunt and a Reece Bayliss penalty. Sam Cairns and Ross Standing notched for the home side.

There was no such joy in the clash of the second strings, though, as Carterton Town B convincingly knocked out of the Witney & District Supplementary Cup Chipping Norton Town reserves 3-1.

Mark Corbett scored for the hosts but goals from John Wood, Si Oakley and Dave Wanless put the Division Four underdogs through to the next round.

In Division Two, Adam Webley (pictured) scored twice as Bourton Rovers beat Spartan Rangers reserves 2-1. Peter Jenkins pulled one back for Rangers.

Javan Nurse and Adam Chadwick each scored as Moreton Rangers overcame Hanborough reserves 2-1. Josh Brookes scored for Boro.

The race for the Division Four crown was blown wide open after Kingham AB reserves beat leaders Wootton 3-0.

Kingham, who moved into third place on the back of the result, scored through Sam Barker, Liam Barnes and Adrian Williams. Despite the loss, Wootton remain top but have played two games more than second placed Carterton Town.
