GOALKEEPER Andy Yarnold was the hero as Pershore Town defeated Cadbury Athletic on penalties in the second round of the Polymac Packaging League Cup.

Yarnold made several good saves during the match and was the star as Pershore prevailed 4-3 in the shoot-out. The game had finished 3-3 after extra time.

Yarnold, in his first appearance of the season, saved two penalties and scored the decisive spot-kick to set up a third-round trip to Premier Division Highgate United, who won 2-1 at Stourport Swifts.

Cadbury stormed into a two-goal lead within 25 minutes of the tie only for Lou Bridges to reduce arrears from the penalty spot.

Will Gayton hauled Pershore level before the break with a powerful header from Ollie Casey’s corner.

Town went ahead after 55 minutes when Luke Church fired home from inside the box after skilful work from Jelson Antonio. Cadbury equalised with 15 minutes remaining but there were no further goals.

Town travel to Pelsall Villa tomorrow in Midland League Division One.

Meanwhile, Evesham United crashed out of the FA Trophy after a 1-0 defeat at Frome Town in a first qualifying round replay. A goal from Jon Davies settled the tie.
