PERSHORE Town’s season got off to an unfortunate start as they fell to a 3-0 home defeat at the hands of Nuneaton Griff.

Despite Nuneaton keeping the ball in midfield, Pershore came closest to breaking the deadlock in Midland League Division One.

Recent signing Will Gayton tested the Nuneaton keeper early on before slipping the ball just wide when through on goal.

Griff found their opener after 33 minutes courtesy of a well-placed, left-footed shot just inside the far post from John Russell after turning his defender.

Town fought to get back and spurned a good chance to equalise when Gayton again found himself through on goal but opted to pass rather than shoot.

The mistakes came back to haunt them after 51 minutes as Tom Bates tucked away from close range after Pershore failed to clear.

The search for a way back continued for Pershore leading to Griff clearing two efforts off the line, including a header at the back post from debutant Will Stallard.

Nuneaton secured all three points in the 73rd minute when Jack Colley was allowed to drive through the Pershore midfield before dispatching a left-footed shot past Town’s keeper Shaun Edwards from 25 yards.

Town attempt to gain their first league points at promoted Chelmsley Town tomorrow night (7.45pm).
