ARMADA enjoyed the better of a nerve-racking penalty shoot-out to win finals night at The De Montfort Sports Centre’s first adult nine-a-side competition in Evesham.

Matches were played over 30 minutes each way on half the size of a normal artificial football pitch in a UEFA Champions League-style format.

The competition, organised with the FA, helped attract two new teams to the Evesham Sunday League and Stratford Alliance, and should become an annual event.

Jackson Fairfield progressed to the final with a 6-2 win over Fortis, while Armada beat Growers United in the other semi.

The two undefeated winning teams from the league stages met with Jacksons taking a two-goal lead but Armada pulling a goal back and then going 3-2 ahead, only to concede a late penalty.

However, the resulting shoot-out saw the victors score four confident kicks with Jacksons hitting the woodwork twice.

Growers won the third-place play-off.
