Round-up
Palmers peaks at Kelso
CONDICOTE trainer Martin Keighley posted his first winner of the 2008/2009 campaign at Kelso when Palmers Peak prevailed under Warren Marston.
Owned by Joe Stanier from Wimpstone, the winner had five lengths to spare at the line when getting the better of a short-priced favourite.
Palmers Peak has been ridden out every day for the past six weeks by Martin's wife Belinda who gave birth to first child Freddie on February 29.
Belinda steered the horse to victory in a couple of point-to-points in 2005 but an injured tendon a year later when finishing fourth in a Cheltenham Hunter Chase clouded the future.
The Cotswold trainer has nursed him back to fitness with the help of Wyck Rissington vet Jeremy Swan and all that effort proved worthwhile in the £10,000 Novices' steeplechase over three miles and one furlong.
Palmers Peak may now be aimed at the Beecher Chase at Aintree in autumn over the Grand National fences.
