EVESHAM Vale’s Derek Barlow secured an International Triathlon Union World Championship place after impressing at the Dambuster Olympic distance.

The swim had to be reduced to 1,000 metres because of the cold, choppy water and strong winds gusted to more than 30mph on the exposed sections for the bike leg.

But Barlow recorded a time of two hours 33 minutes nine seconds for the swim, 42-kilometre bike section and 10km run.

He finished second in his 60 to 64-year-old age group and qualified for the worlds in Auckland, New Zealand, on October 17.
