Top quad in Henley qualifier

EVESHAM’S junior 18 coxless quad will avoid the Henley Royal Regatta qualifiers after booking their place early.

Rupert Malein, Jack Towers, James Waterhouse and Alex Russell shone at Marlow International Regatta at Dorney Lake.

A strong crosswind made life difficult but they finished second in their heat.

Evesham rowed well to be second again in the final and earned a pre-qualifying space in the draw for the big regatta next week.

􀁥 Evesham’s junior squad competed at the annual Stratford Regatta on the River Avon over 750 metres.

The first town win came from Katie Griffiths in the girls’ 16 single sculls, despite rowing up a year, by a couple of lengths.

The next victory came from Lauren Caddy and Ellie Smith, racing up a year in the 16 double sculls. The women’s novice double sculls was between two Evesham crews, Hattie Beech and Sadie Bryan and Bessie Stelnicki and Iona Foister.

Beech and Bryan won by half-a-length and all five victors will get their novice caps in October.

The penultimate win came from the girls’ 12 coxed quad of Gilly Russell, Ellie Richardson, Sian Bird and Daisy Furrokh by almost a length.

The 14 quad of Maddie Baker, Frances Russell, Rhia Woodford and Alice Clements, coxed by Griffiths, won by more than four lengths.

􀁥 Great Britain’s lightweight men’s double of reigning Olympic champions Zac Purchase and Mark Hunter finished last in the ‘A’ final at the second World Rowing Cup in Munich.

The men’s four, including Alex Gregory, took silver.
