Calvert waits on GB place

GREAT Britain paddler Chris Calvert has another race in Nottingham before his Under 23 European Championship fate is decided.

The 21-year-old from Lower Moor hopes to make July’s competition in Portugal after finishing a final fifth over 200 metres in Slovakia.

The ex-Fladbury club canoeist became the country’s fastest under 23 in C1 200m at the national regattas. Calvert said: “Overall, I feel I had a really good race.

“Unfortunately, I didn’t have the best of starts, which is essential in 200m racing, but I got myself back into it and picked up good speed.

“It would have been nice to contend for a medal, though.

The course was on a river, which always makes it a bit more challenging.

“I have got to wait until June 9 and 10 now for another race in Nottingham until I know if I have been selected for the Under 23 European Championships.”
