PERSHORE Swimming Club remain on course for September’s Midlands Junior League Division Two finals.

Ahead of the second round in Nuneaton, the town were without two young competitors due to an eye infection and a poolside fall that required hospital treatment.

Reinforcements rushed across from a two-day meeting in Gloucester but Pershore still managed 12 individual wins and nine relay victories from 51 events against tough opposition.

By halfway, they built up a small lead and an exciting finish produced six wins out of the last 10 races, making it 21 firsts, 11 seconds and 235 points, ahead of Hinckley on 207.

Nine-year-old Simon Sweatman triumphed in the 10 and under 50-metre freestyle with 32.01 seconds and the 11 and under age group.

Charlotte Downey, nine, won the one-length breaststroke in 26.57 and Tazmin Pugh was also successful in the 12 and under 50m butterfly and 50m freestyle.

Nine-year-old Kate Sanderson was first in the nine-year 25m butterfly in 22.63 and Naomi Marsden did likewise in the 10 and under 50m freestyle in a time of 44.82.

In the 10 and under butterfly, Maisy Robertson and Josh Sharratt claimed victory in 19.53 and 17.54 respectively.

Rebecca Philips and Sam Doyle won their nine years one-length backstroke in times of 23.22 and 22.22.

Recording personal bests and joining the successful nine years and 10 and under medley and freestyle relays were William Gearey, Luke Betteridge, Tom Bailey, Ollie Cross, Drew Jones, Owen Leeks, Jack Betteridge and Sammy Whitehill.

The nine year and 10 and under girls took victory in their medley and freestyle relays, helped by Megan Annis, Daisy Tolley, Isobel Cumming, Amy Weston, Hannah Simister, Jasmine Taite and Louise Hird.

The club look forward to the next leg in June, hoping to make the finals having climbed out of Division Three at the first time of asking two years ago.
