ORGANISERS hope to raise up to £30,000 for the club as Evesham United welcome a Manchester United legends side, featuring Frank Stapleton and Sammy McIlroy, to the town on Saturday.

The prestigious clash was originally scheduled to form the grand opening of the Robins’ new £2million ground at Cheltenham Road.

However, it has now been moved to Evesham High School (ko 2pm) after the club were charged £700,000 by the Highways Agency to connect the ground to the surrounding road network.

Organisers of Saturday’s nostalgic match predict a crowd of more than 2,000 will see some of the Old Trafford side’s legends from the 1980s and 1990s battle Robins’ stars of the past.

The Evesham squad will be made up of former players including Simon Brain, Gary Stevens and captained by Tim Hall, with some of the club’s past managers such as Phil Mullen and Dave Busst.

The Manchester United legends, which will include 1999 treble winner David May, will also be at the evening’s entertainment, also held at Evesham High School.

All proceeds raised will go to Evesham United’s club funds.

Former Evesham United manager and event organiser Mick Brennan said: “We’re pretty sure there is going to be over 2,000 tickets sold for the match.

“We’re hoping to raise about £30,000 for the club from the day.

“It’s all about raising money and for the people of Evesham to get the chance to see some of Manchester United’s legends.”

Current Evesham boss Paul West said: “Hopefully a lot of people will come along to see an Evesham United team play in the town, which is quite rare.

“It would have been a dream to have this game as the opening of the new ground, but it wasn’t to be.”

Tickets for the match, priced £10, will be available on the door.

Meanwhile, Evesham’s current first team continued their pre-season preparations with a goalless draw at Slimbridge and a 2-1 win at Stourport Swifts.

Confirmed Manchester United legends XI: Fraser Digby, Mike Duxbury, Lee Martin, David May, Arthur Albiston, Russell Beardsmore, Clayton Blackmore, Sammy McIlroy, Alan McLaughlin, Frank Stapleton, Peter Davenport, Andy Ritchie.
