WYCHAVON District Council hosted their annual Sports Recognition Awards at the Civic Centre in Pershore to celebrate the sporting talent in the area.
This year there was no shortage of talent with the winners coming from all over the district and all will now be entered for next month’s County Sports Partnership Awards.
Winners: Disabled Sports Personality: Scott Ballard-Ridley, of Evesham Rowing Club. After a brain haemorrhage that left him in hospital for 15 months and left him 90 per cent blind and with reduced mobility he then joined Evesham club.
Last summer he got on to the water for the first time and in November, he competed in the British Indoor Championships and is now out of his wheelchair and on crutches. Senior Sports Personality of the Year: Lee Wilks of Pershore Cricket Club. He was captain of Pershore in 2009 and led his record-breaking side to the Division One Crusader Worcestershire Cricket League title.
Senior Female Personality: Naomi Haywood. She played football for Pershore Town Ladies and cricket for Worcestershire and Pershore Ladies and is also treasurer for Pershore Town ladies section.
Junior Male Sports Personality of the Year: Edward Higson. He is a keen dinghy sailor and a valued member of Frampton Sailing Club, competing at club and national.
Junior Female Personality of the Year: Tazmin Pugh of Pershore Swimming Club. Pugh won the National ISA School Championships, setting a new National ISA record and becoming only the third nine-year- old fastest girl in the UK of all-time in ASA records.
Coach of the Year: Martin Davies, of Evesham Rowing Club.
Davies has been successfully coaching the junior boys at Evesham club for the past five years. Young Volunteer of the Year: Elizabeth Grinnell. She regularly trains at Stratford Athletics Club and competes for the West Midlands where she has won eight gold medals. She also currently holds two national age records in the shot and javelin.
Junior Club Team of the Year: Evesham Rowing Club Junior Team.
The junior team, which ranges from 11 to 18 years, have had a successful year, including 93 junior wins, six national medals and nine international vests representing Great Britain or England. Outstanding Contribution Award: Colin Emms from Littleton Football Club. He has been with the club for over 50 years starting as a player, becoming manager, committee member, club secretary and now chairman.
Club of the Year: Evesham Rowing Club. In the summer 2007, Evesham club had nearly all off its boats destroyed or severely damaged in the floods.
Two years later they have become one of the most successful clubs in the country, winning 153 races at national and local level.
Other winners were: Volunteer of the Year: Mark Dewdney; Sport England Community Sports Award: Crowle Searchers junior football teams; School Sports Award: Blackminster Middle School u13s girls’ table tennis team; Contribution to Physical Activity: Colin Tether.
