Sutton Coldfield Town 3, Evesham United 1.
A COMBINATION of injuries and own goals proved too much to overcome for Paul West's side last night as they bowed out of the Red Insure Cup at the second round stage.
Coles Lane has never been a happy hunting ground for Evesham, and so it proved with Sutton adding to the scalp of fellow Zamaretto League Premier Division outfit Rugby Town in the previous round.
Evesham made the worst possible start, falling behind after just three minutes. In attempting to head Jimmy Quiggin's centre back to Nathan Vaughan, makeshift defender Craig Thomas had the misfortune to net with a looping header past his own keeper.
The Royals increased their lead on 19 minutes. Former Evesham striker Richard Ball scored at the second attempt after having his initial shot blocked by Vaughan. Any hopes Evesham had of getting back into the game disappeared early in the second-half.
Craig Owen's low cross from the right was turned into his own net by Danny Hodnett.
Evesham responded with debutant Marcus Palmer and Joseph Cole both going close before Jamie Hyde added some respectability to the scoreline, pulling a goal back with a crisp finish seven minutes from time.
Evesham United: Vaughan, Watson, Hyde, Cole, Luckett, Thomas (Williams 61), Fitter, Woodley (Hodnett 45), Palmer, Cooper, Lennon. Subs not used: Gould, Styles.
Attendance: 51.
